Often I disagree with Charley Reese's columns. Relative to Iran, however, I totally support his comments.
I have "dragged" my wife through three revolutions, including Iran and the Tet offensive, though not in uniform. In short, I have witnessed chaos and some stupid decisions.
The fear I have of taking unwarranted military action against Iran would be unifying the now independent political factions in the Middle East under a common cause – the elimination of Israel and Western influence. The economic impact alone would be catastrophic compared to fuel costs we are experiencing at present.
Another factor that does not surface about Iran is the two conflicting political and social differences in that country, namely: Fundamentalist Islamic followers and the Persian community. A majority of the population long for the good old days of the Shah when one could take his family to a restaurant raise a glass and enjoy life.
In diplomatic discussions, we need to find a common ground of agreement and then develop that relationship so both parties feel progress, goals are being achieved and that the threat of conflict takes a back seat. In short, stop waiving the damn sword and offer a hand in understanding.
