Starkeys To Aid Hospital Expansion

Published: July 5, 2008

NEW PORT RICHEY - NEW PORT RICHEY - Ever since 1937, when Jay B. Starkey Sr. acquired 16,000 of pastureland and started a ranch, the Starkey family has been one of Pasco County's leading benefactors, investing and reinvesting money, land and personal time to the betterment of the community.

Jay B. Starkey Jr. and wife Marsha recently continued that family tradition by pledging $1 million to the expansion of Morton Plant North Bay Hospital.

"Conserving the land and planning for future generations of Floridians has long been a part of our family's purpose," said Jay B. Starkey Jr. "By supporting West Pasco's only not-for-profit, community based hospital, we believe we are taking a new step in supporting a hospital that offers advanced, accessible health care for all residents."

Opened in 1965 as the county-owned West Pasco Hospital, Morton Plant North Bay Hospital is undergoing by far its largest expansion to date. The makeover will nearly double the size of the medical center at 6600 Madison St.

The first component of the project, a new parking lot north of the hospital off Forrest Avenue, was recently completed. Work has now started on a three-story medical office building that will include a sleep disorders unit, outpatient rehabilitation and laboratory services.
