Sen. Hillary Clinton's statement about President Johnson's role in passing the Civil Rights Act was a fact. In no way did that statement detract from or imply anything negative about the role of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s role regarding civil rights.
In his Jan. 23 op-ed page column, Joseph H. Brown elevated the role Johnson played more than Sen. Clinton did. So by Brown's reasoning, he marginalized Dr. King's contributions.
It is simple to use a sound bite and arrange it to fit your message. It is irresponsible, however, to do so to paint a candidate with a broad brush; to imply, in this instance, that Sen. Clinton was in some way unaware or ignorant of Dr. King's contributions to civil rights.
Shame on Brown for thinking even Sen. Clinton's opponents would believe that. What was his real motive?
