HUDSON - HUDSON - The Hudson High boy's basketball team paid tribute to their seniors in a time-honored tradition before tip-off Monday night, and then made sure the soon-to-be graduates' last time on the home hardwood was victorious.
Not only was the 46-33 win over Mitchell sweet because of Senior Night, it also assured the Cobras only the third winning regular season in school history. With two games remaining, Hudson is now 13-10 overall. The thirteenth win is also the third most ever by a Hudson team.
In acknowledgement of the elder's efforts over the years, Hudson head coach Jason Vetter started five of his nine seniors instead of the normal lineup.
Hudson played the entire first quarter like this and without three of their top five weapons – including Jarrod Branco, the top scorer in Pasco County.
After a 7-7 first frame, the Cobras took control with a 7-0 run to start the second.
Going into halftime up 18-12, senior Joe Farchione made up for Branco's time on the bench by dropping in nine points.
Save for a mini Mitchell comeback attempt midway through the final quarter, Hudson ran away with the second half. Another run of 11-0 that stretched from the third into the fourth period sealed the Mustangs' fate.
With 13 points in the second half, Branco finished with 17 overall. When able to play all four quarters, the junior point guard has averaged 23.1 points per game this season.
Hudson also out rebounded Mitchell, 28-18. Cobra forward Stephen Brom muscled out a game-high nine boards.
Mitchell forward Matt Hewitt led the Mustangs with 10 points.
The Cobras now have two more contests to fine-tune their game leading into the Class 4A, District 8 tournament. They are already locked into the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 Zephyrhills in the first round.
The final regular season games are solid, gut-check road challenges as well. The two opponents – Wesley Chapel (Thurs.) and Lecanto (Fri.) – are a combined 38-5. Lecanto is 21-0 alone.
Mitchell (5-17) will finish their regular season Wednesday night at home versus Gulf High. They will be the No. 6 seed in the District 6A-7 tournament and face-off against Countryside in the first round.
