NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Pasco-Hernando Community College's Art Gallery will open a new exhibit Friday that puts a new perspective on an "old" problem in our culture.
"Wisdom of the Ages," a traveling exhibit created by the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science, in Tallahassee, will be on display at the PHCC West Campus through Feb. 28. An open reception is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 5, with live Big Band music, food and memorabilia.
"There is a need for people of all ages to better understand the process of aging, as well as a need to increase the respect for and appreciation of older Americans," the exhibit statement reads.
Life expectancy in this country has increased by nearly 30 years in the past century, the statement notes, adding nearly every day, someone celebrates a 100th birthday.
But as human longevity has increased, we have become increasingly obsessed with youth, the statement further notes.
"Wisdom of the Ages" features 26-framed photographic portraits of Floridians varying from 85 to 115 years of age, each of whom are making an active difference in their respective communities.
Each of the photos is accompanied by an audio box. Using headphones, guests can hear the subjects of each photograph share their philosophies and secrets to living a long, productive life.
Through their stories, these men and women prove that getting older can be a time of continued health and well-being, and of continued contributions to their communities through employment and volunteerism.
The PHCC Gallery is part of the Alric C.T. Pottberg Library on the West Campus, 10230 Ridge Road, New Port Richey. The exhibit is free of charge throughout its run.
Regular viewing hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. For more information about private viewings, or to schedule a group event, call 727-816-3229.
