NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. Last Friday, the West Pasco Board of Realtors held a pep rally to boost support for proposed changes in the state's property tax system that Floridians will vote on Jan. 29.
Today, the board's president is challenging opponents of Amendment 1 to a fight - with words.
In a statement issued late Friday morning Greg Armstrong says West Pasco Realtors want to debate the foes of the proposed constitutional amendment in public.
"Rarely is there such a referendum issue that affects so many Floridians in such a way," Armstrong declares in the statement. "We have debates in almost every race in our area and it would be a shame to miss such an opportunity on an issue of this magnitude."
Among other things, Amendment 1, if approved during the Jan. 29 presidential primary, would double the state's homestead exemption, to $50,000 from $25,000.
It would also allow people who sell a primary residence and buy another to maintain the 3 percent cap on annual property assessments mandated by the 1994 Save Our Homes amendment.
