Poetry Contest Entries Being Sought

HOLIDAY, Fla. - HOLIDAY, Fla. - O, ye who toil in meter and rhyme;

And ... and ... come to think of it, nothing rhymes with "poetry." How ironic.

The Pasco Arts Council, in partnership with Centennial Park Library, is accepting applications for the second annual Jacaranda Poetry Festival Contest.

The contest is open to all poets, regardless of residency, age or experience. However, poems entered into the contest must be unpublished.

Submissions can be mailed to: PAC, 5744 Moog Road, Holiday, FL 34690-2354. There is an entry fee of $3 a poem; checks should be made payable to the Pasco Arts Council. Submissions must be postmarked no later than March 15.

Include two copies of each poem. One copy should include the poet's name, address and phone number. The other, which will be given to the judges to read, should have no identification information.

All winners, including honorable mention, will be invited to read their entries at the Jacaranda Festival on Saturday, April 5, at the Centennial Park Branch Library.

The library is adjacent to The Art Center, the home of the Pasco Arts Council.

Cash prizes and certificates will be awarded at the festival. Their poems will also be published on the council's Web site.

For those who want a creative warm-up in preparation for the Jacaranda Poetry Festival, Alicyn Lopez Weber, published poet , will hold a two-day poetry workshop for adults and teens 1 - 3:30 p.m. Jan. 19 and 26. This workshop is for all levels of poets, from beginners to longtime wordsmiths looking to fine tune their poetic style.

The cost of the two-day workshop is $22 for members of PAC, $33 for nonmembers.
