Case For Obama

David Chauncey, in his Feb. 16 op-ed page column, advised us not to support Barack Obama; that we should "get past the rhetoric and look at the facts."

OK. Let's do.

In the Illinois Senate Obama was the "go-to" guy on a variety of issues in the two years Democrats controlled the chamber. In the Fall of 2003, while still in the Legislature, he spoke out against attacking Iraq. This, at the time, was a courageous thing to do. Hillary Clinton then voted to give Bush the authorization to attack Iraq.

In March 2005, the emergency bill in Congress to allow Terri Schiavo's parents ask a federal judge to prolong her life by reinserting her feeding tube probably would have been stopped if any senator had objected. Obama later apologized for his silence, but Clinton is still silent.

In the debates, Clinton dismissed Obama as "naive" when he expressed a willingness to meet with unfriendly regimes during his first year as president.

Obama has ruled out the use of nuclear weapons to eliminate Osama bin Laden. Clinton disagreed.

Obama would liberalize our antiquated, failed, policy toward Cuba. Clinton disagrees.

How to accomplish these things? Elect a solid majority of Democrats to Congress.
