NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Green-conscious Pasco residents who want to appreciate the environment can check out the March for Parks next month and have some fun while they are at it, organizers say.
"It's coming together," Katie Mac Millen, a recreation leader for the Pasco County Parks and Recreation Department, said.
She is coordinating the annual, family-oriented event. It will be held 1 - 4 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, 10250 Wilderness Road.
Some 500 visitors came to the 2007 edition.
Nearly 20 community groups and businesses will set up events or displays during the 2008, she reported.
Covanta Energy will have a ladybug release.
West Pasco Audubon Society will give away birdhouses while supplies last. Tour guides will lead people on nature walks through the park.
The Native Plants Society will sell Florida-friendly plants.
A solar telescope will be set up to view the sun safely.
Other participants will include Pinellas County's Brooker Creek preserve, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Service, Florida Trails Association, New Port Richey Parks and Recreation Department, county libraries, Florida Yards and Neighborhoods, Pasco Wildlife, Keep Pasco Beautiful, Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park, Home Depot and Central Florida Families for Living History.
Photo contest entries were judged Feb. 15 and will be on display March 2.
