U.S. Rep. Ron Klein, D-Boca Raton, has asked Gov. Charlie Crist to convince Crist's new political big buddy, Sen. John McCain, the likely 2008 Republican presidential nominee, to drop his opposition to creating a national catastrophe fund to pay for damages from natural disasters such as hurricanes. McCain prefers a regional approach to creating a catastrophe fund, which would be a sounder idea. So we hope Crist has no more luck with the Arizona senator than he and other Florida elected officials have had with the rest of Congress when it comes to creating a national disaster fund.
