NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - After more than seven years as recycling coordinator, Rachel Surrency recently left the county post, Pasco County Utilities Services confirmed today.

Surrency started in 2001 after moving from New Hampshire.

She could not immediately be reached for comment.

Surrency is now a science teacher at Hudson High School, the school has confirmed.

The recycling coordinator job opening has been posted on the Pasco County Web site as of Feb. 8. The pay ranges from $37,675 to $64,145 annually depending on experience.

Surrency was initially paid $32,600 when she was hired by Pasco County.

The recently instituted county hiring freeze does not affect the recycling coordinator position, Sigmond said. The post is funded by utility fee revenue, not property taxes.

Some of the same issues Surrency spoke about in her first interview, in 2001, were still being discussed at a county workshop just last month. County commissioners are studying a switch to mandatory, weekly recycling and exclusive territories for trash haulers.

The voluntary Pasco blue bag program includes pickup of recyclable materials every other week. Some half a dozen trash haulers in the county set their own pickup dates, though.

In 2001, the garbage collection companies said they couldn't afford to retrofit their trucks to handle recycling bins in place of blue bags.

In New Hampshire, few areas even had curbside trash pickup, she had pointed out. Recycling was encouraged there by a fee charged on each trash bag dropped off at landfills.

In Pasco County Surrency helped coordinate recycling stations, Arbor Day events, Art of Recycling annual contest, Coastal Cleanups, Adopt a Road and other programs.
