This is in response to the Feb. 2 op-ed page column by Sierra Mision, the Gulf High School student, urging people not to celebrate the passage of Amendment No. 1. Before she makes those sorts of statements, she should wait until she is a homeowner with responsibilities. How much is she personally paying for her education?
A large percentage of Florida homeowners are in mortgage foreclosure or are about to be. Others have their homes up for sale because of high taxes and insurance rates.
The state and counties are subsidizing the construction of new houses and roads. They should take a step back and help the people keep what they have and are trying to sell.
It doesn't matter what amount of saving Amendment No. 1 brings. What's important is there is a savings, period.
Look for school money from the various lottery games that Florida sponsors and from casino taxes. The proceeds are supposed to be for education – or so they say.
Let us retirees enjoy whatever savings we get from Amendment No. 1. We paid and paid all of our working lives. Let us have our just due and leave us alone. The amendment's approval is a start.
