Fred Palensar, of Holiday, stated in his letter to the editor questioning global warming, "The North Pole may be receding, but the South Pole is growing Larger."
Other people have asserted this to me and while it is partially true, it is not completely true and certainly leads one to false conclusions about our current climatic situation.
The Arctic, via satellite photo, has melted so much that it has open sea where for hundreds if not thousands of years it was snow and ice covered. The Antarctic snow and ice mass, which he claimed is growing rather than shrinking is growing in the center of the continent but shrinking at a greater rate around the edges.
Snow and ice on and in the water will do nothing to raise the ocean levels, but as the caps on Greenland and Antarctica melt, the water will be going from land to the ocean causing the ocean to rise.
I have found from other sources that it may be too late to prevent severe ocean rise, say up to 1 meter, about 3 feet. Think of what that will do to Florida, not to mention other low-lying coastal areas.
