NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - The Progress Energy Art Gallery has announced the time and date of its second Friday Night Fling and Art Stroll, 4:30 - 8 p.m., Feb. 8.

The series presents an opportunity for the community to become acquainted with the richness of artistic talent West Pasco has to offer.

In addition, it showcases the diverse businesses and restaurants in historic downtown New Port Richey.

The second event of the year will have a Valentine's Day theme, along with additional items being added to the roster of attractions for the evening.

"The first Fling, in January, was very successful, with about a dozen artists showing their work along Grand," Karren Doll Tolliver, Progress Energy Art Gallery director, said. "It was moved from the dead of summer to this time of year because of better weather and the hopes of attracting tourists and snowbirds."

The event again will feature local artists displaying their original artwork on the sidewalks of Grand Boulevard just south of Main Street.

Furthermore, there will be poetry readings and book signings by local poets and authors and Kiem Le will return and create 15-minute lifelike charcoal portraits.

Also, the Progress Energy Art Gallery will present a complimentary wine tasting. Make a donation of $15 or more to the gallery and receive a free bottle of wine.

Added to the roster for February are horse and carriage rides around the city during which Judy deBella Thomas, executive director of Greater New Port Richey Main Street, will provide historical information.

A local photographer, Paula Showen, will be on hand to shoot 1920s' themed portraits. The subjects of the portraits will be able to don period costumes designed for the event by a local clothing designer, Renee Saitta.

The backdrop for the photos will be Tamara Gerkin's mural "Treasured Memories of New Port Richey." The work by the Port Richey-based muralist is on the Karl Reef building, at Main Street and Grand Boulevard.

Live entertainment will occur in two forms. First, Gypsy Star will perform romantic-flavored music at Cavalaire Square. Second, a street presentation of an old-fashioned radio play by a local author, Ralph Annan. "The Cookie Baker of Grand Street" will be performed by the Progress Energy Art Gallery Radio Players.

"I invite everyone to come down to Grand Boulevard on Feb. 8," Tolliver stated in an e-mail message. "Have dinner, purchase some original art, enjoy the performances, and see for yourself what our historic downtown has to offer."
