NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Only 45 days after a tornado ripped apart a temporary Pasco jail annex, Sheriff Bob White and county officials marveled today at how quickly a replacement was erected at the county's main detention center in Land O' Lakes.
During repairs, a few hundred Pasco inmates were displaced and had to stay in other area jails, White reported at today's Pasco County Public Safety Coordinating Council.
The bill for the temporary accommodations comes to $57 a day for each inmate housed outside of Pasco, Dan Johnson, the assistant county administrator for public services, said.
The last remaining 55 inmates outside of the county were scheduled to return today to Pasco to finish serving their sentences here, the sheriff told the council.
"I think that is an incredible feat," Maj. Brian Head, who oversees jail operations for the Sheriff's Office, said today about rebuilding the temporary jail annex in 45 days.
Commissioner Ann Hildebrand congratulated the jail staff for moving inmates out of harm's way shortly before the tornado descended on the jail annex on Dec. 16 of last year.
"It was a good response," Head said about shifting 184 people to safety within about 8 minutes prior to the tornado strike.
The tornado caused no injuries to jail inmates or personnel, the sheriff emphasized.
