Magician To Present Act At Richey Suncoast

When he was 10, Nathan Coe Marsh saw a man who was a dinner guest at his home levitate a dollar bill about 11 inches above a table top.

"I went crazy about it," he said.

Marsh, now a professional magician, has performed at venues like the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Tampa, and Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort, in Orlando.

He will bring his act, "Expect the Extraordinary," to the Richey Suncoast Theatre in New Port Richey on Wednesday, Jan 7. He will make two additional appearances in February and March. Each performance will be different.

He has gone back to the classic Vaudeville magic acts for inspiration and given them his own twist, Marsh said.

Vaudeville, a "time of powerful live comedy," went at a slower pace than present-day entertainment, Marsh said. "There was time to develop a relationship between the entertainer and the audience."

That relationship is important in his act, Marsh noted. He invites audience members on stage and has them participate in his magic. Those are magic moments in themselves.

"I love it when somebody gets a chance to experience something impossible," he said. "It feels so real; there's not a script for that. People really open up."

The intimate Richey Suncoast Theatre is a perfect venue for his kind of up-front and personal magic, Marsh said.

Marsh has been a full-time professional musician since graduating with a liberal arts degree in 2005 from St. John's College in Annapolis, Md.

While performing, he always keeps in mind the wonder of the 10-year-old Nathan Coe Marsh.

"I love it when I get people to experience how I felt when the dollar levitated," he said.

The lowdown

Magician Nathan Coe Marsh will perform at 2 p.m. Jan. 7, Feb. 4 and March 4, all Wednesdays, at Richey Suncoast Theatre, 6237 Grand Blvd., New Port Richey. All shows are different. Tickets are $9 for a single show or $25 for a three-show package. Call 727-842-6777 for tickets.
