HOLIDAY - Fourteen local clubs and organizations earned $37,852.69 to give back to the community by staffing precincts on Election Day last month, Supervisor of Elections Brian E. Corley announced recently.
In the Adopt-A-Precinct program, volunteers from the groups are paid the standard poll worker wage. Adopt-A-Precinct participants, however, agree in advance to donate their Election Day salaries to a charity of their club's choosing.
"This program works on so many levels," Corley said in a press release. "It is a win-win situation for everyone involved."
The program began in 2006 with just five groups and expanded to 14 groups this year, Corley said.
Holiday Rotary Club members were delighted with their $2,400 share, Debora Diaz, the club's publicity chairperson, reported. The check was presented in early December.
Eight Holiday Rotarians worked the Key Vista precinct, filling the roles of precinct supervisor, voting system specialist, voting system attendant, specialist in the EViD identification system, EViD operator, EViD assistant, ballot distributor, and poll deputy. The average day of a poll worker starts at 6 a.m. and ends at about 8 p.m.
This year, Tracy Livingston led the Holiday Rotary contingent as precinct supervisor. Other volunteers from the group were Vinnie Buscetta, Helga Kerrigan, James Lovell, Roger Michels, Bonnie Polgar, Susan Stackpole-Kelly and Eunice Sullivan.
Holiday Rotary Club members have been volunteering at polls since 2002, before the Adopt-A-Precinct program was launched, Diaz said. For information about Holiday Rotary, call Beverly Plummer at 727-847-4417.
