NEW PORT RICHEY - People should safeguard homes before heading out of town for holiday trips, the Pasco Sheriff's Office crime prevention unit reminds residents.
In the rush and excitement of the season, homeowners sometimes get careless in protecting homes from potential criminals or dangerous hazards.
Even if leaving the house for only a few minutes, make sure to lock doors and windows, officials say.
During an extended trip, ask a neighbor or family member to watch the house, pick up newspapers and collect mail.
Indoor and outdoor lights should be left on automatic timers to give the appearance someone is home.
Leave a radio or television turned on so the house sounds occupied.
Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through windows or doors.
For residents staying home for the holidays, make sure the Christmas tree is mounted on a sturdy base so children, elderly persons or family pets can't accidentally tip it onto themselves.
Christmas trees or other holiday displays should not block doors and passageways inside the house.
