Hospital Workers Create Giant Ball From Shipping Labels

Published: December 17, 2008

NEW PORT RICHEY - Thea Anderson has watched her "baby" grow from less than 2 pounds to tipping the scales at 203 pounds in a little more than three years.

This baby, however, is a giant ball of shipping labels stuck together by Anderson and the material management staff at Community Hospital of New Port Richey.

The staff members wonder if their Baby Sticker Ball now might rate a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Anderson has heard of giant balls of twine and giant balls of rubber bands, but Baby Sticker Ball appears to be unique.

Anderson got the ball rolling on Aug. 10, 2005. She had been slightly annoyed about what to do with all the leftover shipping labels torn off of packages after they had been delivered and processed at the hospital.

And thus was Baby Sticker Ball born. Anderson's cohorts, including Doreen Gilbert, Sue Mize, Cecil Brooks and Chris Randazzo, soon joined in on the fun.

A "birth certificate" was made for the baby by the "proud parents Supply Chain Staff."

A growth chart tracks the weight of the ball since its inception. With a steady diet of shipping labels, Sticker Ball has mushroomed to 203 pounds as of the Nov. 17 weighing.

J. Michael Jones even composed an ode to the department's baby ball.

"A gift of imagination to liven up our work," the poem reads in part, "Oh, yes, we'd been visited by the Sticker Ball Stork. Now he's grown so much, we just can't believe it. When most people see him, they just can't conceive it."

On holidays and special occasions, the staff dresses up the ball, draws a face on it and glues a pair of lips on it.

The proud parents even post photos on the department bulletin board tracking progress of their Sticker Ball.

Yes, they are attached to their creation and they will always stick by its side.
