TRINITY - With families scraping to get by during a sour economy, many West Pasco residents appreciated a helping hand during the holidays at the annual Farm Share food giveaway.
State Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, stood for several hours in a drizzling rain on a cold, wind-swept Friday morning to help hand out turkeys and food. Fasano, state Rep. John Legg, R-Port Richey, and Sheriff Bob White sponsored the drive-through event.
Drivers often flashed a smile as they received the free food. They heard Fasano's trademark salutation, "And God bless!," as they drove away.
More than 450 families benefitted from the Farm Share program, Fasano reported.
Long lines of cars snaked their way through the parking lot of the North Trinity Self Storage parking lot in the Center of Seven Springs shopping center on Little Road.
Many volunteers helped distribute the mounds of food or direct traffic, a Fasano aide Giovanni Casanova, noted.
Helpers came from the Sheriff's Office, the Pasco County Explorer's program, New Port Richey Police Department, the Suncoast Epilepsy Association, and the Knights of Columbus Council 5869, in Port Richey. The Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse in New Port Richey donated the forklift and operator to unload the food.
Students and teachers from Chasco Elementary and Middle School donated a large amount of canned goods and helped to distribute them at the event.
