Anclote Bait and Tackle, 727-945-1808: Offshore anglers got a couple of breaks in the weather to get off shore over the past week, with those fishing 30 to 40 feet of water west of the south end of Anclote Key reporting taking some gag grouper to 28 inches. Fish were on rock bottom and taking Boston mackerel and frozen sardines. One boat returned with six keeper fish. Pompano have been taken in fair numbers at the Anclote power plant outfall. Fish 12 to 15 inches have been landed, along with some permit to 18 inches. Most of the action has been near the pier. Silly Willy jigs in yellow and white, tipped with small pieces of shrimp, have been working well. Anglers fishing in the Anclote River above the U.S. 19 bridge have been taking some reds to 24 inches. Shrimp has been best, and taking a few black drum to 25 inches, as well.
One Stop Bait and Tackle, 727-842-5610: An angler trolling Stretch 12 plugs and spoons in 12 feet of water over rocks west of Anclote Key connected with six keeper grouper to 24 inches, losing two other large fish. The Anclote power plant outfall has been turning up a number of permit. Fish to 3 pounds have been common, with a few as large as 5 pounds reported. Silly Willy banana jigs tipped with shrimp have been a good choice. Pink teasers on the jigs also help. Canals in Gulf Harbors have been holding sheepshead, with anglers reporting catches of fish to 17 inches fishing shrimp and fiddler crabs around docks and rocks. An angler and his wife were fishing the barrel line at the Anclote power plant outfall and reported limiting on trout 18 to 20 inches, releasing 15 oversized fish. They used live shrimp and root-beer Gulp Strips in 3-inch size on jigs. The flats off the power plant have been holding trout, as well. Fish have been in five to six feet of water on grass bottom, relating to potholes. Fish have been running slot size, with some oversized fish reported. Live shrimp and sardines under popping corks have been working best.
Pier 60, 727-462-6466: Bonnethead sharks have been around the pier in fair numbers. Angler shave been landing fish to 24 inches on shrimp and cut baits. A few flounder have been caught, with fish to 18 inches taken on shrimp fished on the bottom with weighted hooks. The fish have been in sandy patches. Silver trout have been taken in good numbers, with fish 10 to 13 inches typical. A few whiting to 14 inches also are being landed. Live and dead shrimp have been working well, though Love's tandem-rigged jigs have been very effective at times. The sheepshead bite has been good, with plenty of fish to 3 pounds being reported. Live fiddler crabs have been tops, followed by sand fleas and shrimp. Reds have been a good bet at the pier, with a number of fish to 26 inches reported. Live shrimp has been best, and catches have been reported during the day and night.
Redington Long Pier, 727-391-9398: Silver trout have been running to 14 inches and taking shrimp well. Some spotted trout are being landed and released, as they are out of season. Some have ranged up to 22 inches. Love's tandem-rigged jigs have taken some of both species. Sheepshead have been another good prospect at the pier. Fish to 17 inches have been taking sand fleas, fiddler crabs and shrimp well.
