Pasco libraries director garners national award

HUDSON - Think of it as the library's equivalent of an Olympic gold medal - Pasco County Library Director Linda Allen recently earned the I Love My Librarian Award from the Carnegie Corp. of New York and The New York Times.

Allen was among 10 librarians nationwide chosen from a field of 3,200 nominees for service to their communities.

Allen will be honored at a ceremony and reception in New York City.

"Librarians are even more important to their communities in this digital age," said Vartan Gregorian, president of Carnegie Corp., in a press release. "They are the people many turn to for help in navigating the complex and information-rich world of the Web where the quality of the research and reports is not always clear."

Janet L. Robinson, president and chief executive officer of The New York Times Co., added that "literacy and public access to knowledge are critical to our democracy."

It's been a banner year for Pasco libraries, spokeswoman Linda Bragg pointed out.

The Pasco system earned Library of the Year from the Florida Library Association earlier this year. Innovative local programs impressed judges, such as Pasco County's original Battle of the Bands and E-government services.

The library system became one of only two libraries in the state to offer two Adaptive Toy Collections. The toys, made especially for physically-challenged children, were donated through the Friends of the Library.

The library is a leader in E-Government services and shares information and methods with other libraries.
Library programs are significantly supported by donations through the Friends of the Library and by donations of time from staff and volunteers.
