Doggie Cakes event benefits pet shelter

NEW PORT RICHEY - Man's best friend and other friendly pets are invited to join Santa Claus for a fundraiser benefitting the SPCA Suncoast Shelter, a nonprofit organization supported entirely through private donations.

The benefit will take place from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Doggie Cakes, 5644 Main St., New Port Richey.

The pet-friendly business is a dog bakery, offering high-quality treats that contain 100 percent human-grade ingredients and no preservatives.

They are made fresh prior to each sale and come in a variety of dog cookie shapes, flavors and sizes.

"We have been wanting to do a benefit for the SPCA for a while now and thought this would be a great way to help them out," said Trina Messano, owner of Doggie Cakes.

For a donation, pets and their owners will be able to have their pictures taken with St. Nick by a SPCA shelter representative; they will then provide a 4-by-6 photo in a holiday card. Lighting will be provided by Pasco Camera Exchange.

Additional proceeds from a raffle of a dog-edible gingerbread doghouse and other items will also benefit the shelter.

Joining Messano and her husband, Doggie Cakes co-owner Jason Longo, will be Patricia Patterson with Read My Paws, a company in Holiday that designs and manufactures a full line of customized doggie and people clothing.

The concept matches people's lifestyle and the lifestyle they share with their dogs.

Read My Paws will bring their full collection of doggie and people clothing, bandanas, and charms starting at 10:30 a.m. "Recycle. Adopt a Dog" T-shirts will be for sale, with $5 from each T-shirt sold donated to the SPCA, as well.
