I'm a snowbird doing my second winter here and my wife and I have come to love the Suncoast. We are puzzled, however, about the filthy conditions of the roadsides.
We live in an RV park on Bolton Avenue, and last year some of us denizens organized a clean-up party. We attempted to get the county to pick up the bags. The county tried to persuade us to adopt the road, which we refused because it required a bunch of red tape. We just wanted to clean up the putrid mess.
After getting the phone-tag runaround, I asked for a commissioner to call me back. A few days later, I got the call. I discussed the situation, and was told we could leave the bags at the roadside when we were through, call the county hot line with a complaint about bags along Bolton Avenue, and a garbage crew would pick them up.
I did and they didn't.
Finally, our park manager did it himself at his expense. My wife and I decided to keep it clean on our own while we are here.
Come on, people, let's have a little pride in our homeland. How about a yearly green-up day, like we have each year in Vermont?
