NEW PORT RICHEY - Relay for Life New Port Richey will hold an Early Bird Party next Wednesday, Sept. 3, publicity chair Risa Bright reports. The fun starts at 7 p.m. at the West Pasco Board of Realtors, 5409 Sunset Road.
It's never too early to prepare for the annual event, set for April 24 and 25 in 2009 at Gulf High School, organizers say. Team members take turns at laps around the Gulf High track to raise pledge money for the American Cancer Society. The 18-hour marathon lasts overnight. Besides, the party Sept. 3 will have the same spirit of fun as the relay itself, Bright explains.
The Relay leaders invite families, caregivers, cancer survivors, schools, companies and any other volunteers to register for the 2009 Relay, pick out camp sites and vote on the theme for next year's event. Call Jamie Mick at 727-642-8041 for more information
The overnight Relay is a community celebration, Bright said in a press release. During it individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance, and take turns walking around a track relay style to raise funds to fight cancer.
At nightfall, participants will light hundreds of luminaries around the track in a moving ceremony to honor cancer survivors as well as friends and family members lost to the disease, Bright said.
The cancer society event is intended to represent hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated, Bright said.
