Short Notice Has Had A Long Career

Published: August 27, 2008

Short Notice got its name from the ability of its members Sue and Robert Plumpton to perform at a moment's notice.

As well they should. After all, as a duo they have chalked up almost three decades in show business, and Sue Plumpton was even entertaining 10 years before that.

The Plumptons are regulars on the West Pasco entertainment scene at Aripeka Elks Lodge 2520 and Elks Lodge 2284, in New Port Richey. Additionally, they often appear at Seniors Are Someone Special Year-Round events at Gulf View Square mall, in Port Richey, and at mobile home and homeowner association events.

But they were seasoned performers before they moved to West Pasco. Sue Plimpton had her own band when the two met. Robert was a design engineer who could not play a note of music, but he quickly became a fan of Sue and attended her performances.

"He doesn't drink. He doesn't dance," she reported. "He got bored just sitting there."

Sue had a solution. "I bought him a microphone and some instruments and said, 'Here, learn.' "

They performed in Las Vegas in the early 1980s at the Tropicana Hotel & Casino and the San Remo Las Vegas Casino, Sue noted. They were represented by the well-known Bobby Morris Agency. Although the Las Vegas-based entertainment agency usually only takes on big-name stars, it also at the time had a few lesser known clients such as the Plumptons, she said.

They bring the skills they learned in the Entertainment Capital of the World to West Pasco. "We don't just play music," Sue said. "We entertain."

That includes getting the audience involved. Attendees at one of the Short Notice events might find themselves dancing or donning costumes.

The Plumptons have a wide repertoire of acts. In this area, 1950s and '60s', country and ballroom are popular, Sue Plumpton remarked, but they can shift to line dancing or '70s and '80s music at a moment's notice.

Audience response keeps the couple on their musical toes, Sue noted. "When you see people smiling or their feet tapping, you know they are enjoying themselves."
