Maybe A Deal

Published: August 27, 2008

For the longest time it seemed as if the only thing passing between Pasco County government and the Pasco School District was bad blood. Yes, the two did make common cause in the successful effort to convince the county's voters to approve the Penny for Pasco sales tax, the lion's share of which the two sides split. Still, they argued for months and months over the issue of how to pay for the impact of the school construction the Penny helps finance on roads and other county infrastructure.

The county and district now appear to have a new area of mutual interest. The plan brothers Frank and Trey Starkey have for the latest development of their family's ranch east of the Seven Springs-Trinity area includes a joint Pasco County-School District park. Sixteen acres of county land and 15 acres of district land would be combined to create space for a combination elementary-middle school complex and a county-owned park and playground students could use during the school day.

The park-playground would be part of the 80-acre regional park the county has been trying to create in the still-growing Trinity area in recent years. So the deal would have a little something for both sides.

According to Ray Gadd, an assistant school superintendent, details of the proposed combo land deal remain to be resolved. So given the recent history between the two sides, keep your fingers crossed.
