Regarding David Chauncey's op-ed page commentary in favor of offshore oil drilling, this is all a political ploy by the Republican Party to create rifts in the election process. The oil companies do not need more permits. They have millions they aren't using.
In order to lower prices they have to deliver more oil, but their refineries are going at full capacity. Any threats to that capacity, such as a hurricane, results in price increases.
People who agree with Chauncey on offshore drilling should talk to people who live in areas already being drilled. For example, people in California who use beaches keep a container of solvent to clean their feet or shoes before entering their abodes. The pipes that deliver crude leak. If you saw overhead pictures of those beaches when the water has receded, the sand is black.
A woman who lives in Galveston, Texas, said she likes to visit her daughter in Clearwater because the beach there is so pristine. When she takes her grandkids to the beach in Texas there are tar balls.
Chauncey wrote they don't have trouble with oil drilling in Norway. Well, Norway has better control over drilling. Company-controlled wells always err on the side of profit.
