Exhibition Gives Artists Chance To Display Work

Published: August 23, 2008

HOLIDAY - A showcase for artists. This is how Ann Larsen, executive director of the Pasco Arts Council, describes the Pasco Art 2008 Exhibition, a judged art show and competition that will run from Sept. 12 to Oct. 24 at the council.

Expected to boast about 100 entries, the show will feature everything from paintings to drawings, photographs to collages, computer-generated art to fine crafts that include glass and metal works, prints to sculptures, mixed media to pastels.

"Artists often stop in and say, 'How do I get my work shown here?'" Larsen said. "Literally any artist can have a piece in this show. We keep it open; it's a chance to be seen."

Arts council assistant director Laura Knox agrees that the show, which has thrived for more than 10 years, is an ideal opportunity for artists.

"The purpose of the show is to make available to amateur and professional artists a venue to display their work," said Knox, who shares assistant director duties with Sharon Adams. "A lot of people want to show their work and don't know where to start. Here you have a good traffic flow of people coming to see your work."

Also beneficial to artists are the cash prizes and certificates awarded in a variety of categories. Prizes will be awarded for categories including best of show, best of category and people's choice.

"This gives people a chance to participate," Larsen said. "We'll have a ballot box set up for people to cast votes for their favorite pieces. Sometimes the people's choice winner overlaps with the judge's choice, sometimes not."

The judges also can select up to 10 honorable mention awards.

The public also benefits from this show, Larsen says, because it gives artists who own galleries outside the area the opportunity to show their work in Pasco County.

"Someone might see the work of an artist they haven't seen before and want to see more," she said. "Also, we at the council might see the work of an artist we haven't seen before, and want to follow up with them for more work."

To qualify for the show, artists must be 18 or older and must ensure that all pieces entered are either framed or museum-wrapped, hung properly or, in the case of three-dimensional art, self-supporting. Each artist may submit one piece for the show. In addition, the work can't exceed 40 inches in any dimension, and must be tasteful and original.

Artists can bring in their entries from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Sept. 6. The center is open Tuesday through Saturday. The show's entry fee is $20 for council members and $30 for nonmembers.

The exhibition will be open to the public, free of charge, Sept. 12 through Oct. 24 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday). An awards reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 19, with awards presented at 6 p.m. All artists and the public are invited.

"This is one of our most popular shows," Larsen said.
