HOLIDAY - Art is the product of human activity. Art is intended to stimulate an idea or emotion through the abstract thought of the artist, and the audience who views artwork.

The Pasco Arts Council has placed a call to artists for its "Pasco Art 2008 Exhibition." This judged competition is open to both professional and amateur artists, ages 18 and up. For more than 10 years the council has sponsored the show with approximately 100 pieces of art being judged.

"This perennial exhibit is one of our most popular, and it always draws hundreds of visitors. More importantly, it provides a 'showcase' for the work of local artists across all media," commented the director of the Pasco Arts Council, Ann Larsen.

Visitors can see a broad spectrum of art, from traditional to more contemporary approaches, Larsen said. While some of the most accomplished artists working in Pasco are represented as well as artists from Pinellas and Hernando counties.

This show will provide a venue for amateurs to share their best work. Those who come to buy will also find a full range of prices. Each artist may submit one entry that cannot exceed 40 inches in any dimension, which includes framing, bases or stands. All artwork must be original from concept, composition and design of the submitting artist and created by the artist.

Categories' for art include: computer-generated digital art; drawing and pastels; fine craft, including clay, fiber, glass and metal; mixed media; painting; photography; print making; and sculpture.

Two-dimensional art work must be framed or museum wrapped - in which the mat becomes a part of the artwork - and equipped with a secure hanging wire. According to a press release no saw-tooth hangers will be allowed. Three-dimensional works must be self-supporting.

Cash prizes will be awarded to Best of Show and Best of Category in each category and will be done at the discretion of the judges. The judges will have the option of selecting up to 10 honorable mention awards. Furthermore, there will be a People's Choice Award, which will be determined at the end of the show.

Artists may drop off their entries between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. from Aug. 26 until Sept. 6, Tuesday to Saturday, at The Arts Center, 5744 Mood Road, Holiday. The center, home of the Pasco Arts Council, is adjacent to Centennial Park Branch Library. Entrance fees are $20 for council members and $30 for non-arts council members.

The Pasco Arts Council is sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, The Florida Arts Council, and The Endowment for the Art.
