NEW PORT RICHEY - Plans for improvements to U.S. 19 in Pasco County will be unveiled at an Aug. 28 public hearing.

In a bid to ease traffic flow, the Florida Department of Transportation is planning to create continuous right-turn lanes for the state highway along its roughly 20-mile course through West Pasco, according to a document from the agency's District 7 office, in Tampa.

Also, the county is teaming up with DOT to redesign U.S. 19 medians at the same time. The planned "channelization" would create medians with turn lanes.

They would replace conventional open medians that allow traffic to crisscross U.S. 19 from side streets and parking lots, often creating safety hazards.

Pasco County is estimating the cost of the channelization at $13.36 million, according to a presentation Tuesday by Chief Assistant County Administrator Michele Baker. The county would pay its share of the cost with Penny for Pasco sales tax revenue.

The improvements tentatively have been scheduled during the state's 2010 fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2009.

The public can comment about the proposed U.S. 19 improvements at the hearing, which will be held 5 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Madison Square Special Event Center, 4035 Madison St., New Port Richey.

The evening's open house format will allow people to examine maps and displays related to the U.S. 19 project at their leisure while asking questions of DOT officials, according to a newsletter from Robert Clifford, chief of the District 7 Intermodal System Development Department.

DOT engineers intend to make a formal presentation at 6 p.m. about this early phase of the project, which is called project development and environment study.

In addition, maps and drawings of the project will be available from now through Sept. 8 at Centennial Park Branch Library, 5740 Moog Road, Holiday.
