Kudos to David Chauncey for his Aug. 9 op-ed column on oil. He was on target about our need to drill for oil in our territory rather than rely on Middle Eastern countries, many of which hate America.

Experts tell us there is more oil and oil shale within the continental U.S. than in all Arab countries combined. We can agree on a sensible safe approach to drilling while continuing to explore alternative energy sources.

When Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her Democrat cohorts closed Congress to begin their five-week paid vacation, they refused to allow a vote on a Republican energy bill that would, among other things, have removed the ban on offshore drilling in areas known to contain billions of barrels of oil.

The president has the authority to call Congress back into emergency session. It might behoove Congress to realize the oil crisis is destroying our economy and it needs to act now or suffer the consequences in November.
