TRINITY - The seventh annual Rotary Club of Keystone Sunrise "Swinging for Charity" golf outing is scheduled to hit the tees on Friday, Sept. 19, at Trinity's Fox Hollow Golf Club.
While raising money for a number of charities - namely the Adaptive Toy Collection and the Pace Center for Girls - the tournament also pays respects to a former charter member, Jack Hopkins.
Ginny Pierce, a public relations spokeswoman for the Rotary, characterized Hopkins as a "very colorful figure in the community" and as being "extremely active, participating in everything to help fundraisers."
Hopkins died on Sept. 2, 2004, just weeks before that years' tournament, and the outing has been named in his honor ever since.
Organizers are hopeful for a sellout of 116 golfers - or 29 foursomes - this year, according to Pierce.
Last year was the tournament's best fundraising effort ever, netting about $10,000, she said. This year's goal is $15,000.
The increase in donations is in large part the result of sponsors who have help put on the event over the years, Pierce said, notably Thomas B. Dobies Funeral Homes and Dr. David Dempsey, a New Port Richey dentist.
The tournament will be a standard best-ball scramble, beginning with a shotgun start. Lunch will be provided at the turn and the dinner banquet will have a Cajun shrimp and jambalaya theme.
Registration fees are $100 per golfer. Groups may also pay $450 for a foursome and also get a tee sign to advertise their business.
