NEW PORT RICHEY - Former River Ridge running back Shawn Ford will be attending Chowan University in Murfreesboro, N.C. to play for the NCAA Division II Hawks.
Ford rushed for 463 yards on 104 carries and caught eight passes for 68 yards his senior year.
Rob Oppedisano, a local speed and agility trainer who has worked with Ford over the past three seasons, said the 6-foot, 205-pound back is excited to have a chance to continue his football career at the next level.
Chowan University, located in the northwest reaches of North Carolina, is a small, private, Baptist school with an enrollment of roughly 800, according to www.petersons.com.
The D-II Hawks finished 2-9 last season and recently switched conferences, joining the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association on July 24. The membership makes Chowan the first non-historically black college or university admitted to the CIAA.
