Deputies Step Up Patrols At Anclote Gulf Park

HOLIDAY -- When the sun goes down, some mischief-makers seem to mistake Anclote Gulf Park for party central.

So authorities have been cracking down on violations at the gulf-front park at 2305 Baillies Bluff Road.

The park is popular with anglers because its fishing pier is on the north bank of the warm-water discharge canal for Progress Energy Florida's Anclote generating station.

Officials, however, don't want it to be a magnet for people violating the law.

"That's not the place to party," said Kevin Doll, public information director for the Sheriff's Office. He thumbs through a stack of June incidents reports from the park, primarily liquor law violations.

A sign at the park's entrance warns visitors that alcohol is prohibited. The park itself closes at 8:30 p.m., authorities note.

People, however, still have 24-hour access to the park pier. Frederick J. "Rick" Buckman, director of the Pasco County Parks and Recreation Department, however, said changes in policies are possible if problems persist.

There have been so many incidents at Anclote Gulf Park, according to Sheriff's Office reports, plain-clothes deputies have stepped up patrols of the park in recent weeks.

Among more than a dozen reports of sample cases supplied by the Sheriff's Office, were incidents in which minors, ages 16 and 17, were among those caught drinking alcohol or smoking pot at the park.

They were not alone. Other citations were issued to adults ranging in ages from 18 to 47 on liquor or narcotic violations.

The park is by no means the exclusive province of male offenders. In one case three teenage girls were cited for possession of alcohol. Another incident involved a 47-year-old woman from Lutz who was cited for having alcohol in the park.

Other offenders hailed from Palm Harbor and Fort Myers. A 20-year-old woman from Tarpon Springs was among arrestees found with marijuana at the park.
