Volunteers Needed for Food Drive

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Volunteers will canvass West Pasco neighborhoods in October and November for the Kids Against Hunger food drive.

The Volunteer Way food bank is putting out the call for volunteers for the fundraiser and food drive, Martha O'Brien, assistant CEO at Volunteer Way, announced.

"This is a great opportunity for families to work together, have fun and at the same time help local, hungry children and their families," O'Brien wrote in a flyer being distributed now.

The nonprofit Volunteer Way already distributes free food to more than 5,000 needy families in Pasco from its headquarters at 7820 Congress St.

Lester Cypher supervises the food bank and is its long-time chief executive.

More than 5 million pounds of food also is distributed each year to people in need, food pantries, soup kitchens, residential programs for the mentally challenged, hospice organizations and other charities.

Still, more people in dire need don't realize they can get free aid, O'Brien believes.

That helped inspire the ambitious Kids Against Hunger drive. Helpers will rally neighborhoods in the door-to-door campaign.

O'Brien is searching for block captains, people to deliver flyers, children and parents to pick up food and public relations volunteers.

"All that it takes is 10 to 20 hours per year," O'Brien said.

If people can't lend a hand directly, O'Brien is seeking donations of nonperishable food, diapers or cash contributions. All donations are tax deductible.
