NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - The Take Stock In Children program of the Pasco Education Foundation has received grant funding from the local Sam's Club.
Greg VanBuren, membership team leader of the Sam's Club on U.S. 19, along with Co-manager Mike Craig, recently presented Pasco County's Take Stock in Children Program Coordinator, Rosanne Heyser with a check for $1,000 towards the program.
The state of Florida matches every donor contribution, dollar-for-dollar, making every contribution double in value, says Heyser.
Take Stock in Children is a comprehensive scholarship and mentoring program providing underprivileged and at-risk Pasco County students an opportunity to earn up to a four-year college scholarship.
"The Take Stock in Children Program is a valuable resource for the Pasco County School District. This unique initiative pairs at-risk students with community members who serve as mentors and motivators," Superintendent of Schools Heather Fiorentino recently said.
Heyser says there are currently 120 high school students in 24 schools earning their scholarships by meeting with their mentors, receiving good grades, good attendance and good behavior.
Upon receiving their award, students, along with their parents, sign a contract agreeing to remain crime- and drug-free as they continue towards graduation day.
"Take Stock in Children truly makes a difference in the lives of students and I would encourage support of this worthwhile program," Fiorentino encourages.
Since its inception in 1995, Take Stock in Children has awarded more than $78 million in college scholarships. In the 2006-2007 school year, 86 scholars in 11 high schools and 12 middle schools received the awards.
