September is filled with many important activities affecting not only the present but also the future of America.
It is the start of the presidential campaign for '08, it is the month when the long anticipated reports on progress in Iraq are due. It is the month when there are several anti-war protests planned around America. It is the month of the anniversary of 9/11.
This September could also mark the beginning of heightened tensions in America among Americans. Both the left and the right of the political spectrum are geared up and ready to defend their positions. Americans in the middle – independents and the undecided – are taking a wait-and-see approach.
Wherever we stand, let us never forget that it is because of America that we are allowed to be who we are and believe what we believe. Those who march for peace but who threaten others with words or innuendoes do not understand tolerance.
There is no right to hate or to harm or to harass. There was a time when intellectual discourse was the foundation of this America, but we have strayed very far from such a principal. Let us return.
