Reds taken in mangroves along Dutchman Key

One Stop Bait and Tackle, 727-842-5610: Anglers working the mangroves along Dutchman Key at Anclote Key have been finding reds 22 to 23 inches. Berkley Gulp strips in chartreuse have been working well. The mouth of the outfall canal at Anclote Key has been giving up some drum to 30 pounds. Live shrimp and chunks of cut bait have been working best. Lots of blacktip sharks have been around Marker No. 4, west of Gulf Harbors. The marker area also has been good for mackerel to 18 inches. Fish have been running to 4 feet and taking cut bonito and other cut baits. The sand bar north of Anclote Key has been producing some trout 15 to 17 inches. Live shrimp has been working, as are jigs. A few pompano were reported by anglers working yellow and white Silly Willy jigs around the cut at the southeast end of Anclote Key. The Pasco artificial reefs have been producing good snapper catches day and night, with a few to 17 inches landed. Black drum have been running to 20 pounds in the canals at Gulf Harbors.

Denny B's Bait and Tackle, 813-885-9811: A regular at the shop reported good numbers of mangrove snapper and mackerel at Pier 60. The snapper were running to 14 inches and the mackerel to 15. He also hooked a nice snook on a live shrimp, but lost it in the fight. There were several large cobia swimming under the pier, but not taking baits.

Holy Mackerel Tackle, 727-547-9889: Night and early morning fishing in Clearwater Pass and at the bridge there has been turning up some good numbers of snook to 30 inches, along with a few to 40 inches. Topwater plugs, live shrimp and small ladyfish have been good baits.

Fisherman's World, 727-942-8944: The oyster bars and mangroves behind Caladesi Island have been producing some reds from undersized to more than 30 inches. Live shrimp and jigs have been producing, along with topwater plugs. The back side of Anclote Key has been another good spot for reds to the same size. Berkley Gulp strips on jigs have been a hot bait.

Pier 60, 727-462-6466: A few mackerel to 14 inches, with the odd larger fish, are being landed. Clark's silver spoons and shrimp have been working. The bite has been falling off around noon. Cobia are around the pier but reluctant to take a bait of any kind. Some appear to be up to 35 inches. A few snook to 30 inches have been caught since the season opened at the first of the month. Bluefish have been running to 3 pounds.

Tarpon Tom's, 727-938-2379: The north end of Anclote Key along the west side of sand bar there produced some reds to 30 inches for Capt. Lenny Crispino. Fish were taking jigs with Berkley Gulp strips and shrimp. A few trout to 18 inches were being caught along the east side of the sand bar north of Anclote Key. Fish have been over the grass bottom and taking shrimp under popping corks. Keeper fish have been scarce.
