On Saturday, West Pasco residents will once again have a chance to turn concerns about the county's littered waterfront into positive action. The 2007 International Coastal Cleanup will be held Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. until noon.
Since there are Coastal Cleanup sites in all parts of West Pasco – Holiday, New Port Richey, Port Richey and Hudson – green-minded people who don't like to waste fossil fuel don't have to worry about driving a long distance.
The 2006 Coastal Cleanup in West Pasco attracted nearly 1,400 volunteers. They policed up a total of 17 tons of trash from waterfront locations. While it's a bit disturbing that there were 34,000 pounds of junk littering Pasco coastal areas in the first place, at least the stuff ended up where it should have been in the first place, a proper disposal site.
There may, alas, be waste of an equal or greater volume waiting for 2007 Coastal Cleanup volunteers.
