NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Every year but one, the city has held a memorial ceremony to honor the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks.

This year, the event is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 11, 7 p.m., in Sims Park.

The memorial will offer the people of Pasco County the opportunity to honor those individuals while reflecting upon the nation and hoping for a peaceful future, says Pasco County School Superintendent Heather Fiorentino.

Fiorentino is the chairwoman of the memorial event's organizing committee.

"We must never forget the loss that our nation suffered as a result of terrorism," Fiorentino said. "We must always remember and support the brave members of our military who are proudly protecting our freedom around the world."

The event serves as a time for Pasco residents to unite as Americans, participate in prayer by local clergy and hear patriotic music by the Richey Concert Band. Two West Pasco school choirs from Longleaf Elementary School and River Ridge High School will also perform. The music starts at 6:30 p.m.

Two local military members – Marine Corps Reserve Lt. Col. Tom Castriota, the Hudson-area Chevrolet dealer, and Army Capt. Jeffrey Grey – will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

The keynote speaker will be Florida Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp.

In years past, the memorial has attracted approximately 1,000 people with local dignitaries, city officials and residents in attendance.

Pasco school children will display their patriotism-themed artwork along a fence in the park.

In conjunction with the memorial service, the September 11 Committee is asking individuals to participate in Operation Shoebox.

Operation Shoebox, which was founded in 2003, is an effort to send support, snacks and much needed personal care items to the troops deployed outside the United States.

A complete list of items can be found at the Operation Shoebox Web site. Donations can be made at the memorial service in Sims Park.
