Gallery's First Ever Children's Exhibit At First Friday Event

NEW PORT RICHEY, FL - NEW PORT RICHEY, FL - The Progress Energy Art Gallery has invited the community to join in welcoming the first children's artist exhibit to the gallery.
The event will take place during the gallery's traditional First Friday on Sept. 7, 6 p.m. The gallery is at 6321 Grand Boulevard, downtown New Port Richey.
In July, Michelle Astuto Collins, a local artist and staff member at the gallery, taught the gallery's first children's art classes using mix media.
The packed classes were taught once each week for four consecutive weeks. Collins taught two sessions each week for students 7 to 9 year olds and 10 to 12 year olds, according to the gallery's director, Karren Tolliver.
The first round of classes was so popular she implemented a second series. With such high demand, Collins will teach classes on a continuous basis throughout the year.
Collins says she designed the classes around a simple mosaic technique using paper instead of ceramic or glass.
"I had so much fun with these children," Collins says of her students. "I was amazed by their talent and how smart they are."
Students also created drawings and other types of artwork for the class and ended by combining all their work into individual portfolios.
Now, Collins will coach them through the next step to being an artist – displaying their artistry in an exhibit, complete with opening reception.
"This has been an all-around wonderful and eye-opening experience," Collins says. "Being an eclectic artist with my own work, I look forward to introducing all of the different projects to them that I have in mind for each class I will do in the future."
