Tackle shop roundup
Denny B's Bait and Tackle, 813-885-9811: Some good reports of redfish catches have been coming in from anglers working Booth Point off Oldsmar in Tampa Bay. Fish have been taking gold spoons and other lures, with most of the action around oyster bars. Bluefish have been running as large as 5 pounds in 5 to 6 feet of water in the same area, with live shrimp under floats working well. The bite is off and on as schools move through.
Masters Bait and Tackle, 727-945-7191: John from the shop and a fishing mate worked 200 yards from shore between Howard Park area and Dunedin, taking 15 keeper-sized trout to 20 inches, along with a lot of shorts. They used live shrimp under popping corks.
Fisherman's World, 727-942-8944: The spoil islands along the Intracoastal Waterway off Crystal Beach south to Dunedin have been producing some keeper trout to 18 inches. Fish have been taking various jigs, Berkley Gulp Baits and MirrOLure plugs. Good numbers of reds were reported by anglers working the back of Caladesi Island along the mangroves. Fish to 30 inches were landed and released, along with shorts and slot-sized fish. Berkley Gulp strips on jig heads were working well, as was shrimp.
Pier 60, 727-462-6466: The bite at night has been best, with good numbers of snook being landed. Most have been undersized, but a few larger fish are being hooked. Topwater plugs have been effective, as is live shrimp and small ladyfish. The trout have been another good bet at night, with lots of fish being landed. Most anglers are weeding out many short fish to get to the keepers, which have been ranging up to about 17 inches. Mangrove snapper have been running 12 to 13 inches and taking shrimp well. Cut greenbacks have been another good bait. Though the daylight bite has been fair, when the sun goes down the fish feed better.
Salonika's Bait and Tackle, 727-849-6377: Anglers working the grass bottom north of the Cotee River around the stilt houses have been scoring trout to 16 inches. Shrimp and jigs have been working well late in the day and first thing in the morning. Anglers fishing at night have reported snook around the pilings of some of the stilt houses. The flats between the houses and the shoreline north of the river have been turning up a few reds to 22 inches. Most of the action has been off Salt Springs. Shrimp has been working best.
