It is unfortunate that many of the people responsible for the Iraq situation – and many journalists – feel the citizenry deserves misinformation. They have gone so far as making pawns out of some military officers.
Hillary Clinton is on track in asking for an Iraq exit plan. To avoid being a long-term occupying power there, we have to do what we did with Israel – help it become one of the world's best fighting forces.
Another effective and capable fighting force I, an Air Force retiree, have come in contact with is that of Turkey. The Turks separate their religious concerns from what they are called on to do. Without this kind of trust there can be no exit from Iraq.
To have an orderly exit, we must systematically replace the crews that maintain tanks, planes and other military hardware with well-trained Iraqis. We should have had the trust to start training and equipping our replacements some time ago.
Once we do, we can withdraw our troops who have been stabilizing the area and replace them with Iraqis, keeping that strength constant.
We should respect the people of a country we say we attacked to replace a tyrant.
