TRINITY, Fla. - TRINITY, Fla. - Teams all across America are gearing up for the 2008 American Cancer Society's Relay for Life campaign.
The Trinity Relay for Life chapter is no exception, holding its first scheduled meeting on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. in the J.W. Mitchell High School cafeteria, 2323 Little Road in New Port Richey.
Anyone interested in joining in the fight against cancer can attend the meeting to register their relay team and to learn more about Relay for Life of Trinity, says Nicole Hahn, community representative.
Included in the kickoff meeting are food, fun, and a raffle drawing for a $100 gift card.
Last year, Relay for Life of Trinity included more than 75 cancer survivors and 60 teams dedicated to raising money and awareness for the fight against cancer.
Combined, the volunteers were able to raise $166,000 to donate to the American Cancer Society for cancer research and treatment, Hahn adds.
Relay for Life began as one man's battle against cancer and a journey to raise funds to support the American Cancer Society.
In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked, jogged, and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Wash. His run alone raised $27,000. Twenty-one years and 22 countries later, Relay for Life has raised $375 million worldwide with the 2006 events.
The 2008 Relay for Life of Trinity will be May 2 at J.W. Mitchell High School.
