River Ridge to Present 'Grease'

A theater production this weekend will evoke the smell of leather jackets, the beat of 1950s rock 'n' roll and the taste of a first kiss.

The River Ridge High School drama department will present "Grease," the classic musical about teenage life in the 1950s this weekend.

"You are guaranteed to feel like you are back in the 50's all over again," said drama teacher and director Diana Rogers. "The show is endearing and nostalgic of the high school years ... and appeals to all ages."

The musical focuses on the romance of teenagers Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski in Chicago in 1959. Its music celebrates 1950s rock 'n' roll.

The Broadway production of "Grease" opened in 1972 and ran for a then-record breaking 3,388 performances.

Music and lyrics are by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey.

Well-known songs from Grease include "You're the One That I Want" and "Hopelessly Devoted to You."

The film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as Danny and Sandy was released in 1978.

In addition to Travolta, other actors playing Danny over the years include Richard Gere, Barry Bostwick, Treat Williams and Patrick Swayze.

Actresses playing Betty Rizzo, the leader of the Pink Ladies gang, have included Rosie O'Donnell, Adrienne Barbeau, Stockard Channing and Lucy Lawless.

Performances are Friday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 3, at 2 and 7 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. at Center for the Arts at River Ridge, 11646 Town Center Road, New Port Richey.

Tickets for all performances except the Saturday matinee are $10. The Saturday matinee is $6.
