A newcomer and seasoned professional have teamed up to bring smooth jazz sounds to Holiday.
Veteran jazz guitarist Tom Patten and self-described jack-of-all trades Carolyn Campbell, who has only recently narrowed her focus down to jazz singing, perform at Some Place Else and German Restaurant, both in Holiday.
Patten promises their music is easy on the ear. "When a lot of people hear the word jazz, they think of some group in a corner playing weird music. We play really pretty classic jazz with nice phrasing."
One of the most frequent compliments the duo gets is their music is not so loud as to drown out conversation. "People can talk and listen," he noted.
Patten accompanies singer Campbell on a $10,000 jazz guitar backed by professional tracks.
The pair has been performing together for about six months. Campbell has been singing professionally since 2003.
Patten heard a jazz vocalist wanting to come out in Campbell who, when he met her, was singing pop music.
"We switched over to jazz," he said. "That's where her voice fit."
He worked with her about a year before they performed publicly.
Patten got his first paid gig when he was 12. At that time, his brother, sister and Patten were paid to play for a children's television show in their native Iowa.
At 15, he went on the road, playing in local Midwestern bands.
In 1980, he moved to Florida and brought his jazzy guitar sounds to Brothers Lounge, a jazz club in Tampa. When, under new ownership, Brothers became The Fox, Patten stayed.
"I've been playing in the same night club since I moved here," he said. "I've kind of been the house guitar player for years."
Since moving to Holiday, he has narrowed his playing at The Fox to only Tuesday. The pair also performs at Brennan's on Alt. 19 in Tarpon Springs on Thursdays.
During his career, Patten has played with saxophonist Jerry Martini, one of the original members of rock-funk-psychedelic band Sly and the Family Stone, and well-known Suncoast jazz and soul musicians Shawn Brown, keyboardist Allon Sams, and saxophonist Eric Darius.
He has toured in Paris, Mexico and several American ski resorts.
The duo performs Fridays and Saturdays in the Martini Bar in Some Place Else, 3645 Universal Plaza, on U.S. 19 near Moog Road in Holiday, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
They are at German Restaurant, 2616 U.S. 19, Holiday, on Sundays, 1 - 3 p.m. and 5:30 - 8 p.m.
Additionally, Patten teaches guitar at the Encore Music store, in Port Richey.
They can be seen and heard on the Some Place Else Web site.
