As a new resident of Tarpon, I was walking with my wife along Alt. 19, on the public sidewalk, when out of nowhere – and with nary a shout of "fore" – I was struck by a golf ball launched from the tee on the 10th hole, which runs parallel to Alt 19.
It hit me on my shoulder, luckily. My wife, who's a foot shorter, was walking beside me. One more foot to the right, she would have been killed.
Tarpon is remodeling the city-owned course. So, they really need to follow the lead of St. Andrews Links, in Dunedin, and put up a safety net along that hole. They have one to protect golfers from the driving range. It would make sense for them to protect the innocent public as well.
Fortunately, since the incident above occurred, the city of Tarpon Springs has begun addressing this safety issue. The mayor, the golf course manager, the risk manager and director of parks and recreation are all involved and all seem very solution-oriented.
