Trinity, Fla. - Trinity, Fla. - Coming into Tuesday night's district showdown with Countryside High, the J.W. Mitchell Lady Mustangs had won eight of their last ten matches and have been playing confident volleyball all around.
Getting their second crack at the Lady Cougars at home and riding on the recent team momentum, it seemed like a perfect opportunity for Mitchell to make a statement.
The problem was Countryside wasn't having any of that.
The Lady Cougars (20-2, 10-0) made quick work of the match - winning 25-5, 25-22, 25-15 - and showing that while Mitchell is certainly a contender, they are still on top.
Certainly not helping the cause for Mitchell (16-6, 6-4), were problems prior to the game that left them with minimal warm-up time before the match. Signs of the mishap showed in the first game as the Lady Mustangs looked flat-footed while Countryside - led by Madison Truluck's powerful kills at the net - rolled to an easy win, jumping to a 12-0 lead.
"They came out cold and flat," Coach Paulk said about the brutal first game. "It takes everything we have against Countryside. They're way too good to give them anything, and we came out flat."
Countryside came out quick in the second game as well, but the Lady Mustangs hung in and began answering with some plays at the net - an area Countryside dominated throughout the match.
Mitchell grabbed the lead at 21-20, but couldn't seal the win. Consecutive unforced errors gave the Lady Cougars the advantage right back and Countryside closed out the game by three.
"Good news is, they really fought back," Paulk said of his girl's effort in the second game and early in the third. "It wasn't for a lack of playing hard, but we did not play well."
For the season, Countryside topped Mitchell 3-0 in both contests.
Mitchell plays host to the 6A-7 District Tournament beginning Oct. 24-26.
