What with the pace of development in the Central Pasco area these days, Pasco Safety Town is not as in the middle of nowhere as it used to be. The fact that the Suncoast Parkway was constructed just a stone's throw away is evidence of that.
Still, the miniature-scale child safety education facility on S.R. 52, eight miles east of U.S. 19, isn't always in the spotlight. That's unfortunate because Safety Town performs a lot of important functions. In addition to teaching youngsters in the 5 - 8 age range how to stay safe, it is home to training for the county's school crossing guards and Community Emergency Response Team.
It took many years to create Safety Town, which the Pasco Sheriff's Office operates. That's because the facility was created primarily by volunteer labor using donated materials. Keeping Safety Town in operation is also a voluntary operation. It is always in need of donations and people to lend a hand with Safety Town programs, says Cpl. Tim Spitzer of the Sheriff's Office, the Safety Town coordinator.
People should consider giving of their money and time and call Spitzer at 727-919-1053.
